Music-Business-Peace Summit hosted by the Jacobs School of Music and Kelley School of Business

By bringing together national and international researchers, the Jacobs School of Music and Kelley School of Business are co-hosting the second annual live-streamed summit that focuses on the intersections between music, business, and peace, on May 11, 2018.
 
The event, available online from 8am-6pm, includes papers and panel discussions by faculty from the Kelley School of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, and Jacobs School, as well as leading voices across the globe with experience and leadership in areas such as peace building in the arts, conflict resolution through performance, business ethics, El Sistema, Artful Learning, and global policy.
 
“It’s precisely the existence of copious, yet disparate work from scholars and musicians aiming towards peace building, that has inspired the planning committee to hold this summit where goals can be aligned and coordinated,” said Constance Cook Glen, co-organizer of the event.
 
Participants are leading figures in their fields, including Timothy Fort, Kathleen Marie Higgins, Arlen Langvardt, Jamie Prenkert, Karen Woody, Alain Barker, Brenda Brenner, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, Cynthia Cohen, André de Quadros, Gisela Flanigan, Constance Cook Glen, Halina Goldberg, Aida Huseynova, Marianne Kielian-Gilbert, Nancy S. Love, Ruth Stone, Olivier Urbain, and Jeffrey Werbock.
 
“As shapers of culture, music and business, our guests have much to say about how we might build peace,” said Kelley School Professor Timothy Fort,” and the surprises may well come from their interactions.”
 
The 2017 summit generated a number of new conversations and resulted in the development of sixteen articles for publication. Two national journals are dedicating special issues to these topics: Indiana Law Journal and the College Music Society’s Symposium.  Six articles will be published in the Symposium in an online format this summer at http://music.org. The second set of ten articles will be printed in the Indiana Law Journal in January 2019.
 
The 2018 summit will extend its reach through a partnership with Business Fights Poverty (businessfightspoverty.org), which has agreed to stream the presentations for one month. After the initial month, BFP will help us to continue the conversation by using specific topics as jumping off points for asynchronous discussion. These will be online in June, July, and September. Business Fights Poverty has become the largest business-led collaboration network focusing on social issues. With over 20,000 professionals around the world, BFP develops three to nine month programs that provide the opportunity of in-depth, global engagement of social issues.
 
Additional partners for this year’s project include the Jacobs School’s Music in General Studies Program and Office of Entrepreneurship & Career Development, the Indiana Law Journal, and College Music Society.
